“I guess Dad was glad to hear we’d be staying at Zendric’s for a while,” Driskoll said, hoisting the pack on his back.

“Yeah,” said Kellach. “I almost feel bad. He seemed really tired of the whole thing.”

“Or maybe he was just tired of us,” Driskoll suggested.

Moyra blew a stray strand of red hair from her eyes. “At least he didn’t punish you like you thought he would.”

“That’s what’s so weird about it,” said Kellach. “I expected to hear we were grounded forever and that we could never go to Zendric’s again. Instead, he seemed relieved to see us go.”

“Well, we’ll try to be better, once this quest is over, right, Kellach?”

Kellach twisted his face. “Yeah, right.”

“Do you really think we’ll find a dragon?” Moyra asked.

“Of course we will,” Driskoll said. “Won’t we, Kellach?”

Driskoll could tell his older brother mulled the question over in his mind. Driskoll wouldn’t have expected anything less from him. When Kellach finally spoke, his words were a bit like something Zendric would say. “I believe that if we’re meant to find the silver dragon, then it will be.”

“Ooo!” Moyra mocked. “Listen to you! So mysterious and worldly!”

“He is, isn’t he?” Driskoll said, laughing. “You need to lighten up a bit, Kell. Look! It’s a beautiful day, and the entire realm is stretched out before us!”

Driskoll waved his arm, taking in the view that surrounded them. After walking for about an hour, they stood on a slight hill that offered a stunning view. Curston lay behind them, its walls wrapping around the protrusion of dwellings and shops that formed the town. The tall spire of St. Cuthbert’s, the tallest building in Curston, rose sharply from the town center. Driskoll even thought he could see Zendric’s tower off to one side, but he couldn’t be sure.

Moving away from Curston, the scenery spread out in glorious patches of fields and meadows. Ever so gently, the land began to rise, and as Driskoll turned back, he noticed the jagged peaks of the mountains that rose in the distance, the sun glinting off the snow that capped their peaks.

Raising a hand to shield his eyes, Driskoll pointed to the mountains. “I suppose that’s where we’re headed?”

Kellach nodded. “Zendric says silver dragons are known to live in those mountains. He drew a map, but with peaks as obvious as those, I don’t think we’ll get lost. He did say it would take several days, though. And that it would be dangerous.”

“Dangerous?” Driskoll asked, willing his voice not to shake. “What kind of dangerous? Like goblin dangerous?”

Kellach nodded. “Zendric said there’s a goblin this big”—he lifted his hand high above his head—“and he’s been looking for you ever since our last trip to the ruins.”

Driskoll’s eyes went wide. “Really?”

Moyra glared at Kellach and put her arm over Driskoll’s shoulder. “Just ignore him, Driskoll. He’s teasing you. You know goblins only live in the ruins and we’re nowhere near there.”

“Besides,” Kellach hoisted up his pack. “With me in charge of this expedition, you two have nothing to fear.
